The Humanitarian

Humanitarian Activities

Although Michael Jackson was popularly known for music and entertainment, there was more to him than just music. He was a humanitarian as well. He took a special liking for the less fortunate, especially children who were terminally ill. He also catered to the needs of adults.

Michael Jackson was a humanitarian, and he got recognition for this from the Guinness Book of World Records in the 2000 edition,’ Most Charities Supported by A Pop Star.’ He gave his support to about 40 charity organisations. He supported them with money and helped them secure sponsorship from well-established organisations to implement their projects.

Some of these charity organisations, include but are not limited to the following:

  • BMI Foundation
  • American Cancer Society
  • Angel Food
  • Dakar Foundation
  • Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
  • Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund
  • The Sickle Cell Research Foundation

We have so much more organisation supported by the pop star off the record. They include.

  • Operation Christmas Child
  • Go for Your Dreams
  • Foundation for the Junior Blind
  • Wishing Well Fund
  • National Solidarity Fund, Family Caring for Families
  • Crown Princess Mahal Charities Sirindhorn’s etc

Asides from rendering support to other foundations and organisations, MJ also had his foundation.

Heal the World Foundation

This was the charity organisation founded by the legendary pop star himself. The foundation came into being in 1992, and it spawned the creation of an all-time classic that goes by the same name. He names the foundation after the song,’ Heal the World.’

Through his work at the foundation, MJ airdropped 46 tons of supplies to Sarajevo. He also set up a trust for less fortunate children, a trust worth millions of dollars. Asides from that, he helped to battle drug and alcohol abuse, paid the medical bills of some children.

Essentially, the charity foundation’s aim was to make available food and medicine to children to help them combat hunger, abuse, exploitation, and homelessness, etc. The foundation also had some of the less privileged kids brought to Michael Jackson’s ranch, situated in California. They went on park rides and so many other fun adventures.

Frankly speaking, there was so much more history as regards Michael Jackson’s work than highlighted here. He gave out his time and money privately, so he did not document most of his charitable works. He gave out nothing less than 300 million dollars to charity during his lifetime. Still, the undocumented figure would be much more, so he would have touched millions of lives than what has been accounted for.

However, in 2002, the charity lost its status due to its failure to file accounting statements yearly. During this time, another organisation upstaged them and incorporated them under the same name applied for tax-exempt status in 2008. Of course, Michael Jackson’s estate took legal action in 2009 and sued the organisation for infringement on trademark and unfair competition. Asides from that, the foundation helped and touched so many lives.
